Entrevista exclusiva con The Kiss That Took A Trip sobre su EP: “Hold Music”

Después de un tiempo de anticipación, la creación del visionario artista M.D. Trello, The Kiss That Took A Trip, vuelve con fuerza con su EP tan esperado. Originado en Madrid en 2006, este proyecto musical único en su clase. Inspirado por grandes figuras como Steve Albini, Trent Reznor y Godspeed You! Black Emperor. Con "Hold Music", nos sumerge en una odisea musical, fusionando electrónica y sensibilidad pop en cada una de las cuatro pistas. Desde el enérgico ritmo de "Everything is Disappointing" hasta los cautivadores matices de "Tastes Like Copper" y el toque de "Spiteful Hopeful". 1. "Hold Music" marca el regreso después de una pausa largamente esperada. ¿Qué inspiró esta pausa y cómo ha influido en el sonido y la dirección creativa de su nuevo EP? // "Hold Music" marks the return after a long-awaited hiatus. What inspired this hiatus and how has it influenced the sound and creative direction of your new EP?

The Kiss That Took A Trip (Spa): La pausa se originó en la pandemia y se extendió hasta principios de 2023 por cuestiones estrictamente personales. Fue un período horrible y oscuro en mi vida, y aunque es algo que transpira fuertemente en la letra, no afectó el sonido por alguna razón. Las pistas de este EP suenan melódicas y animadas, en su mayor parte, y no tengo la menor idea de por qué. Tal vez mi subconsciente estaba tratando de contrarrestar todas las cosas negativas.

The Kiss That Took A Trip (Eng): The hiatus originated in the pandemic, and it extended until early 2023 because of strictly personal issues. It was an awful and dark period in my life, and although it’s something that transpires heavily in the lyrics, it didn’t affect the sound for some reason. The tracks on this EP sound melodic and lively, for the most part, and I don’t have the slightest idea why. Maybe my subconscious was trying to counterbalance all the negative stuff.

2. El EP cuenta con cuatro canciones distintas, cada una con su propio estilo y atmósfera. ¿Puedes hablarnos sobre el proceso de creación de estas canciones y cómo lograste infundirles esa combinación encantadora de electrónica y sensibilidad pop? // The EP features four different songs, each with its own style and atmosphere. Can you tell us about the process of creating these songs and how you managed to infuse them with that lovely combination of electronica and pop sensibility?

The Kiss That Took A Trip (Spa): Las cuatro pistas me vinieron a la mente de una manera muy directa. Todo fue pura inspiración. Parece que tomar un largo descanso engrasó mi máquina creativa. Muchas otras veces soy capaz de explicar mi proceso creativo de una manera más analítica, pero esta vez tanto las melodías como las estructuras nacieron solas. De hecho, algunas de esas ideas me encontraron en medio de diligencias que no podía detener, así que hice esa cosa vergonzosa de alcanzar mi teléfono celular, esconderme en una esquina y susurrar la melodía en el micrófono.

The Kiss That Took A Trip (Eng): All four tracks came to my mind in a very straightforward way. It was all pure inspiration. It seems like taking a long break oiled my creative machine. Many other times I’m able to explain my creative process in a more analytical way, but this time both melodies and structures were born on the ir own. In fact, some of those ideas found me in the middle of errands I couldn’t put to a halt, so I did that embarrassing thing of reaching for my cellphone, go hide in a corner and whisper the melody in the mic.

What was the inspiration behind this song and how does it represent the distinctive sound of The Kiss That Took A Trip

The Kiss That Took A Trip (Spa): La letra del coro fue lo primero. No eran más que una declaración irónica de resignación después de todo lo que había pasado últimamente. Así que comenzó un poco humorístico pero se volvió progresivamente más oscuro. Todavía es una canción bastante ambivalente, y una vez que la terminé, no pude evitar notar que había mucho Nine Inch Nails en ella. Cada vez que se me ocurre una canción que me recuerda a otro artista, tiendo a descartarla, pero esta vez hice una excepción. Es una pista que, si bien no se aleja demasiado de mi sonido "normal", se basa en la agresión de una manera inusual, si la comparas con mis trabajos anteriores.

The Kiss That Took A Trip (Eng): The lyrics for the chorus came first. They were nothing but a tongue-in-cheek statement of resignation after all I’d been through lately. So it started a bit humorous but got progressively darker. It’s still a pretty ambivalent song, and after it was finished I couldn’t help but notice there was a lot of Nine Inch Nails to it. Everytime I come up with a song that reminds me of other artist, I tend to discard it, but this time I made an exception. It’s a track that, while not being too far from my “regular” sound, relies on aggression in an unusual way, if you compare it to past works of mine.

4.  ¿Qué papel juega la estética visual en la presentación y experiencia general del album? // What role does the visual aesthetic play in the overall presentation and experience of the album?

The Kiss That Took A Trip (Spa): Estoy literalmente obsesionado con las obras de arte. Podría ser uno de los últimos que escucha música mientras sostiene un folleto o echa un vistazo a la portada. Entonces, como artista, paso mucho tiempo pensando en el concepto y el diseño. Con respecto a "Hold music", se me ocurrió una versión que me encanta: simple, icónica, utiliza un esquema de color que evoca la melodía y la sensación general es una buena mezcla de seriedad y no tan grave.

The Kiss That Took A Trip (Eng): I’m literally obsessed with artworks. I might be one of the very last few who listen to music while holding a booklet or taking a look at the cover. So, as an artist, I spend a lot of time thinking about the concept and the design. With regard to “Hold music”, I’ve come up with a cover that I happen to love: simple, iconic, it uses a colour scheme that evokes melody, and the overall feel is a good mix of serious and not-so-serious.

5. ¿Cuáles son tus planes y ambiciones futuras en tu carrera musical? ¿Hay algún estilo o dirección que te gustaría explorar en proyectos futuros? // What are your future plans and ambitions in your music career? Is there a style or direction that you would like to explore in future projects?

The Kiss That Took A Trip (Spa): Me sentiría contento con poder seguir haciendo esto por unos cuantos años más. Estoy seguro de que llegará un momento en que la unidad simplemente no estará allí. También estoy seguro de que quiero explorar otras cosas, como escribir, por ejemplo, así que hay una fecha de caducidad para The Kiss. Hasta entonces, realmente me gustaría lograr una producción mucho mejor para mis próximos lanzamientos. El próximo será mi cuarto álbum, proyectado para 2024. Después de eso, huelo que solo hay un par de álbumes adicionales antes de terminar.

The Kiss That Took A Trip (Eng): I’d feel content with being able to keep doing this for a few more years. I’m sure there will come a time when the drive is simply not there. I’m also positive that I want to explore other stuff, like writing, for instance, so there’s an expiry date for The Kiss. Until then, I’d really like to achieve a much better production for my next releases. Next one will be my fourth album, projected for 2024. After that, I smell that there are only a couple of extra albums before calling it quits.

6. ¿Cómo abordas el proceso de producción y composición para crear una experiencia inmersiva y personal en tu música? ¿Cuáles son tus principales objetivos al crear música? // How to approach the production and composition process to create an immersive and personal experience in your music? What are your main goals when creating music?

The Kiss That Took A Trip (Spa): Trato de escribir música que me haga sentir un poco flotante. Música que es capaz de atrapar a los oyentes pero, al mismo tiempo, dejarlos ir por un tiempo hasta que decidan que tienen ganas de reconectarse con la música. Canciones que tienen múltiples salidas y cruces. Y no hay receta para eso. No que yo sepa.

The Kiss That Took A Trip (Eng): I try to write music that makes me feel a little floaty. Music that is able to grasp the listeners but, at the same time, let them go for a while until they decide they feel like reconnecting to the music. Songs that have multiple exits and junctions. And there’s no recipe for that. Not that I know of.

7. ¿Qué mensaje o emociones esperas transmitir a los oyentes a través de este EP y cómo esperas que se conecten con tu música? // What message or emotions do you hope to convey to listeners through this EP and how do you hope they connect with your music?

The Kiss That Took A Trip (Spa): Creo que una vez que sale una canción, ya casi no es tuya. La música desencadena un montón de emociones diferentes, incluso contradictorias... Si tengo que esperar algo, elegiría una sensación de valor de repetición, como he dicho a menudo. Idealmente, el oyente tendrá el impulso de volver a pulsar el botón “reproducir” y escuchar todo desde el principio varias veces.

The Kiss That Took A Trip (Eng): I think that once a song is out, it’s hardly yours anymore. Music triggers a whole lot of different emotions, even contradictory ones… If I have to hope for something, I’d choose a feel of replay value, as I’ve said often. Ideally, the listener will have the impulse of hitting again the “play” button and listen to the whole thing from the start several times.
