Interview with Anton Commissaris about is single "Said, I'm Sorry"

Anton Commissaris es un talentoso cantante y compositor que fusiona la esencia del country clásico con una profunda capacidad para contar historias. • 1- ¿Cómo describes tu estilo musical y qué influencias tiene? // How do you describe your musical style and what influences does it have?

(Spa): Mi estilo musical tiene su base en el jazz, pero se extiende a veces hasta incursionar en el soul, el R&B y la música country. Con esta canción, estoy en modo country. Mis principales influencias musicales son Cole Porter y Frank Sinatra en el jazz, Ray Charles y Bill Withers en el soul, el R&B y Willie Nelson, Johnny Cash y Gram Parsons en lo que respecta a la música country.

(Eng): How do you describe your musical style, and what influences does it have?My musical style has its foundation in Jazz but extends to occasionally venturing into Soul/R&B and Country music. With this song, I’m in Country mode. My main musical influences are Cole Porter and Frank Sinatra in Jazz, Ray Charles and Bill Withers in Soul/R&B and Willie Nelson, Johnny Cash, and Gram Parsons when it comes to country music.

• 2- ¿Qué te inspiró a escribir "Said, I'm Sorry" // What inspired you to write "Said, I'm Sorry"?

(Spa): Estaba explorando la música country para mi próximo proyecto musical y un día, esta melodía apareció en mi cabeza con la letra inicial, "Said, I'm Sorry". Suena bien, pero me pregunté de qué estás arrepentido. "Lo siento por lastimarte..." fue la respuesta. A partir de ahí, surge una historia sobre un hombre que cruza la línea y traiciona a su pareja a través de una aventura. Se arrepiente profundamente y se da cuenta de que realmente está enamorado de su pareja, pero es demasiado tarde, ya que ha roto la confianza en su relación. Ahora tendrá que vivir con las consecuencias de sus acciones.

(Eng): I was exploring country music for my next music project, and one day, this melody popped into my head with the initial lyric, “Said, I’m Sorry.” It sounds nice, but what are you sorry for, I questioned. “I’m sorry for hurting you …” came the response. From there, a story emerges about a man who crosses the line and betrays his love partner through an affair. He regrets it profoundly and realizes he’s really in love with his partner, but it’s too late, as he’s broken the trust in their relationship. He’ll now have to live with the consequences of his actions.

• 3- 3- ¿Cuál es tu historia personal con la música country? // What is your personal history with country music?

(Spa):  No tengo mucha historia. Empecé leyendo la autobiografía de Willie Nelson más por interés en un artista colega que por la música country. A medida que leía el libro, se hacían referencias a ciertas canciones y las escuchaba para entender mejor la historia. Me di cuenta de que me gustaba la forma de contar historias y la sencillez que suele encontrarse en la música country. Luego vi el documental de Ken Burns sobre la música country y me di cuenta de que había mucha historia que no conocía, así como algunos artistas y grabaciones fantásticos. La música siguió atrayéndome a medida que la exploraba.

(Eng): I don’t have a lot of history. I started by reading Willie Nelson’s autobiography more out of interest in a fellow artist than in country music. Certain songs were referenced as I read the book, and I listened to them to better understand the story. I realized that I liked the storytelling and the simplicity often found in country music. I then watched the Ken Burns documentary on country music and realized there was a lot of history I didn’t know about, as well as some fantastic artists and recordings. The music kept growing on me as I continued to explore it.

• 4- ¿Hay alguna anécdota detrás de la composición de esta canción? // Are there any anecdotes behind the composition of this song?

(Spa): No especialmente, ya que esta canción se basa más en la imaginación que en una historia personal. La canción es bastante alegre, incluso bailable, pero el tema de la letra es triste y perturbador. No estoy seguro de cómo logré esta yuxtaposición, pero aprecio la ironía.

(Eng): Are there any anecdotes behind the composition of this song?Not especially as this song is based more on imagination than on any personal history. The song is quite jaunty, even danceable, yet the lyrics' theme is sad and disturbing. I’m not sure how I achieved this juxtaposition, but I appreciate the irony.

• 5- ¿Cuánto ha influido tu vida personal en la creación de tus canciones? // How much has your personal life influenced the creation of your songs?

(Spa): Pienso que las canciones tienen tres elementos que influyen en su creación: i) tus experiencias de vida personales, ii) la experiencia de otra persona que conoces y iii) tu imaginación. A menudo hay una combinación de los tres, y un elemento influye más que los demás.

(Eng): I think of songs as having three elements influencing their creation: i) your personal life experiences, ii) someone else’s experience you know about, and iii) your imagination. There’s often a combination of all three, with one element influencing more than the others.

• 6- ¿Qué esperas que la gente aprenda o sienta al escuchar tus letras? // What do you hope people learn or feel when listening to your lyrics?

(Spa): Espero que la gente escuche y entienda la historia detrás de la canción. Espero que se conecten emocionalmente con la forma en que está arreglada e interpretada la canción. Y espero que asocien la canción con sus propias vidas y experiencias y reconozcan la empatía en la letra. Ninguno de nosotros es perfecto; todos estamos juntos en esta vida, tratando de hacer lo mejor que podemos.

(Eng): I hope people hear and understand the story behind the song. I hope they connect emotionally with how the song is arranged and performed. And I hope they associate the song with their own lives and experiences and recognize the empathy in the lyrics. None of us is perfect; we’re all in this life together, trying to do our best.

• 7- ¿Qué proyectos a corto plazo tienes para el futuro de tu carrera musical? // What short-term projects do you have for the future of your musical career?

(Spa): Estoy promocionando este lanzamiento y próximamente otro single llamado “Shot Him Dead”. Luego, lanzaré el EP completo, “Look Straight Ahead”, con cinco canciones nuevas a fines de febrero de 2025. Paralelamente, tengo otras ideas de canciones para la próxima grabación.

(Eng): I’m promoting this release and soon another single called “Shot Him Dead.” Then, I’ll release the whole EP - “Look Straight Ahead” - with five new songs at the end of February 2025. In parallel, I have some other song ideas for the next recording.
