Interview with Lemonboy about Is álbum "Lemonboy"

Lemonboy es un cantante y compositor independiente que, a través de su álbum debut homónimo, nos invita a explorar temas como la identidad, el autodescubrimiento y la compasión. Con un estilo honesto y vulnerable, este proyecto celebra la fuerza de la familia elegida y el poder de la colaboración. 

• 1- ¿Cómo describirías el sonido y la esencia de este álbum? // How would you describe the sound and essence of this album?

Spa: LEMONBOY mezcla folk acústico y pop con un toque teatral, creando una colección de canciones profundamente personales. Reflexiona sobre la identidad, el crecimiento y la bondad, ofreciendo una mirada vulnerable a los momentos más impactantes de la vida. Cada canción fue escrita en un momento en que mis emociones se sentían tan abrumadoras que tuve que darles forma. El proyecto es también un testamento a la comunidad y la colaboración; sin el amor y el apoyo de la familia que elegí, me habría rendido innumerables veces. Es música que me importaba, escrita porque la necesitaba, y se siente como la expresión más auténtica de mí misma.

Eng: LEMONBOY blends acoustic folk and pop with a touch of theatrical flair, creating a deeply personal collection of songs. It reflects on identity, growth, and kindness, offering a vulnerable look at life’s most impactful moments. Each song was written during a time when my emotions felt so overwhelming that I had to give them shape. The project is also a testament to community and collaboration; without the love and support of my chosen family, I would have given up on it countless times. It’s music that mattered to me, written because I needed it, and it feels like the most authentic expression of myself.

• 2- ¿Qué canción del álbum crees que refleja mejor quién eres como artista y por qué // What song on the album do you feel best captures who you are as an artist and why?

Spa: La canción que da título al álbum, "Lemonboy", se siente como el corazón de este proyecto. Es autobiográfica, reflexiona sobre mis inseguridades y dudas y las transforma en algo significativo. La canción une el álbum, entretejiendo motivos de otras canciones en un final teatral que honra al niño teatrero que llevo dentro. El apodo de "Lemonboy" empezó como una broma entre amigos en el instituto, pero se me quedó grabado a lo largo de los años. Se ha convertido en un recordatorio del amor y la comunidad que me han formado. Grabar con este nombre me pareció una forma de honrar el apoyo de la familia que elegí y de abrazar las formas en las que sigo creciendo.

Eng: The title track, "Lemonboy," feels like the heart of this project. It’s autobiographical, reflecting on my insecurities and doubts while transforming them into something meaningful. The song ties the album together, weaving motifs from other tracks into a theatrical finale that honors my inner theater kid. The nickname “Lemonboy” started as a joke among friends in high school, but it stayed with me over the years. It’s become a reminder of the love and community that have shaped me. Recording under this name felt like a way to both honor the support of my chosen family, and to embrace the ways in which I continue to grow.

• 3- ¿Qué emociones espera que sienta su público al escuchar sus canciones? // What emotions do you hope your audience feels when listening to your songs?

Spa: Espero que los oyentes sientan esperanza: esperanza de curación, de cambio, de compasión. Aunque el álbum explora una serie de emociones, desde el dolor a la alegría, pasando por el asombro, todas están enmarcadas por la creencia de que el mañana puede ser más brillante que el hoy. Creo que la esperanza puede ser una fuente de energía silenciosa pero poderosa y, sin ella, perdemos impulso. Como artista queer, la esperanza me parece muy, muy importante en estos momentos.

Eng: I hope listeners feel hope - hope for healing, for change, for compassion. While the album explores a range of emotions from grief to joy to wonder, they’re all framed by this belief that tomorrow can be brighter than today. I think hope can be a quiet but powerful source of energy and, without it, we lose momentum. As a queer artist, hope feels really, really important right now.

• 4- ¿Cuál fue el mayor reto durante el proceso de grabación y cómo lo superaste? // What was the biggest challenge during the recording process and how did you overcome it?

Spa: El tiempo fue, con diferencia, el obstáculo más difícil. Al entrar en el estudio sabía que era un proyecto ambicioso, pero aun así fue todo un reto. El primer día, me costó hacer una canción que había tocado cientos de veces. La presión por cumplir los plazos hacía difícil concentrarse, y cada toma parecía alejarse más y más de una grabación viable. Decidimos seguir adelante y retomarla más tarde, y me eché a llorar. Sentía que estaba fracasando desde el principio. Por suerte, estaba rodeado de colaboradores que creían en mí y en el proyecto y pude volver a la canción con la cabeza más despejada. Cuando volvimos a ello, grabamos "Everyone Has Those Nights" en sólo un par de tomas. Al final, decidí cortar un tema por falta de tiempo, pero creo que fue lo mejor. Agradezco a mis amigos que me mantuvieran con los pies en la tierra.

Eng: Time was by far the toughest hurdle. I knew going into the studio that this was an ambitious project but it was still quite the challenge. On day one, I struggled to get through a song I’d played hundreds of times. The pressure to stay on schedule made it hard to focus, and it felt each take was getting further and further away from a viable recording. We decided to move on and revisit it later and I cried. I felt like I was failing right out of the gate. Thankfully, I was surrounded by collaborators who believed in me and the project and I was able to come at the song with a clearer head. When we came back to it, we recorded “Everyone Has Those Nights” in just a couple of takes. Ultimately, I chose to cut a track due to time constraints, but I think it worked out for the best. I’m grateful that my friends were there to keep me grounded.

• 5- ¿Qué le inspiró para convertirse en músico y compartir su historia a través de sus canciones? //:What inspired you to become a musician and share your story through your songs?

Spa: Llevo escribiendo canciones desde que tengo uso de razón, pero nunca me había considerado un "músico". Hasta hace poco, simplemente ha sido la forma en que siempre he procesado mis mayores sentimientos. Presentar "Bright" para el cabaret de solistas del Gay Men's Chorus of Washington, DC en 2023 fue un punto de inflexión para mí. En aquel momento, estaba pasando apuros en muchos aspectos de mi vida y encontré mucho consuelo en mi música. Compartir esa canción con el público, junto con la inspiración que había detrás de ella, crecer siendo gay en una escuela católica, me recordó el poder de la vulnerabilidad. Esa experiencia, junto con un suave pero entusiasta empujón de la directora artística de GMCW, la Dra. Thea Kano, me ayudó a encontrar la confianza para dar este salto y grabar el álbum justo antes de mi 30 cumpleaños.

Eng: I’ve been writing songs for as long as I can remember, but I’ve never thought of myself as a “musician.” Until recently, it’s just been how I’ve always processed my biggest feelings. Submitting “Bright” for the Gay Men’s Chorus of Washington, DC’s soloist cabaret in 2023 was a turning point for me. At the time, I was really struggling in a lot of areas of my life, and I found so much comfort in my music. Sharing that song with audiences, along with the inspiration behind it, growing up gay in Catholic school, reminded me of the power of vulnerability. That experience, along with a gentle-but-enthusiastic nudge from GMCW’s artistic director, Dr. Thea Kano, helped me find the confidence to take this leap and record the album just before my 30th birthday.

• 6- ¿Qué artistas o experiencias han marcado tu estilo musical? // What artists or experiences shaped your musical style?

Spa: Sara Bareilles ha sido una gran influencia, su autenticidad es algo por lo que lucho. También admiro a Phoebe Bridgers, Boygenius y las Indigo Girls por su vulnerabilidad y sus armonías. Desde el punto de vista lírico, me inspiran la narrativa de Taylor Swift y las rimas y juegos de palabras ingeniosos de Stephen Sondheim. Todas estas influencias confluyen en mi música, sobre todo en canciones como "Ribbons" y "Everyone Has Those Nights".

Eng: Sara Bareilles has been a huge influence—her authenticity is something I strive for. I also admire Phoebe Bridgers, boygenius, and the Indigo Girls for their vulnerability and harmonies. Lyrically, I’m inspired by Taylor Swift’s storytelling and Stephen Sondheim’s clever rhymes and wordplay. All these influences come together in my music, particularly in songs like “Ribbons” and “Everyone Has Those Nights.”

• 7- ¿Está trabajando en algún nuevo proyecto o colaboración que pueda adelantar? // Are you working on any new projects or collaborations that you can bring forward?

Spa: Se me están ocurriendo muchas ideas. Acabo de hablar con mi amigo Murray WOW de hacer una remezcla pop de uno de los temas. (Su cuarto álbum, "More", salió a la venta a principios de este mes para los aficionados a la música pop). Hay unas diez canciones que en algún momento estuvieron previstas para "Lemonboy", así que un proyecto de cara B ha sido algo a lo que he dado muchas vueltas en mi cabeza. Pero también he estado escribiendo mucha música nueva y explorando direcciones muy diferentes a "Lemonboy". Por no mencionar que tengo un archivo de literalmente cientos de canciones que he escrito a lo largo de los años. Me encantaría grabar al menos un puñado de viejas canciones favoritas en un momento u otro. Sea lo que sea lo siguiente, tanto si se trata de retomar viejas canciones favoritas como de crear algo nuevo, me entusiasma la idea de seguir creando música y comunidad con la familia que he elegido.

Eng: I have so many ideas brewing! I was just talking with my friend Murray WOW about doing a pop remix of one of the tracks. (His fourth album, “More”, released earlier this month for any pop music fans!) There are ten or so songs that were at one point slated for "Lemonboy", so a B-side project has been something I've turned around in my head a lot. But I’ve also been writing a lot of new music, and exploring directions that feel really different from “Lemonboy”. Not to mention, I have an archive of literally hundreds of songs I’ve written over the years. I’d love to record at least a handful of old favorites at one point or another. Whatever's next, whether it’s revisiting old favorites or creating something new, I’m excited to keep creating music and community with my chosen family
