Using generative AI to create music has been a necessity for me. I'm neither a musician nor a singer, but I’ve been writing lyrics professionally for 20 years, so this became an opportunity: when I discovered generative AI software that could create music based on text, I thought this might be the right moment to express what I had to say. First and foremost, the need to denounce the genocide that Israel, backed by the USA and with the complicity of governments worldwide, is committing in Palestine and Lebanon.
As I mentioned before, my primary motivation comes from the genocide in Palestine; as a human being and pacifist, I cannot accept this horror without taking action. The first song I wrote in 2008, Controcorrente, alreadInterview y contained a reference to Palestine, devastated by 70 years of war: “to that strip of land that separates life from the most atrocious death at the hands of an enemy.” This urgency led me to write Presente and Present in English, to once again scream the need to stop the horror in the Middle East.
Usually, it all starts with an image. I work in street photography, and I find a strong connection between my photos and the lyrics I'm writing. I write verses inspired by an image that struck me, and then I start working on the prompt that will allow me to create the song with SUNO, the generative AI software I use. After that, I go through at least 100 iterations before reaching the final form of the song.
For now, the biggest challenge is convincing myself to write music and songs, having never done it before in my life. It’s a significant personal journey I’m undertaking. The music around us is filled with banal words and sounds, but I intend to create something entirely different. People tell me to leave it to the “real” musicians, but I have no intention of stopping for now. As long as I have something to say and the desire to say it, I’ll be here.
I hope people allow themselves to be carried away by the song's delicate mood, by the harmonies and melodic sounds, and then focus on the song’s meaning. I put a lot of effort into ensuring the message couldn’t be misunderstood, using words as clear as possible, avoiding metaphorical tangents, complex terms, or intricate alliterations. Present is a song of peace and should be understood as such—a contemporary anthem for peace, with the awareness that our mistakes, the ones we’re making now, are the same as those of the past. This doesn’t make us much different from well-dressed apes, evolved animals, but not by much.
I'm planning numerous collaborations with real artists and a producer, Max Bertoli, to create increasingly hybrid sounds. The next album, set for release in 2025, will be called Primo and will ideally continue the concept of my first album, Buffet. It's like an allegorical meal where tylerdurdan* says everything he has to say, with no holds barred. I hope it satisfies, though I already have Secondo in mind, an album made up of pure electronic music. The meal is long; there’s still time until Dolce.
As I’ve said before, my songs carry a message of peace, but also of rebellion, a challenge to conformism and capitalism. It’s a stubborn and opposing stance, as Fabrizio de André might have put it. Times are what they are; people prefer to listen to lighthearted music, singing about “Sex and Samba,” and ignore the horror surrounding us. I’m the one waking you up from your enchanted dream. The world is a terrible place—can we do something to make it better?
