Interview with William McLaughlin about is single "Better"

En esta entrevista, conversamos con William McLaughlin, también conocido como WGMC, sobre su primer sencillo "Better". Con una mezcla única de influencias que van desde Nirvana hasta Mac miller, William nos comparte su proceso creativo y la profundidad emocional detrás de su música. Acompáñanos en este recorrido donde revela sus sueños, su relación con la música y sus próximos proyectos.

• 1- ¿Qué te inspiró a crear tu single "Better"? // What inspired you to create your single "Better"?

Spa: Emular a mis héroes de la música, crear un riff único o pegadizo que sería mío, con el que la gente ojalá se identificara y sintiera la misma alegría que yo cuando escucho lo que amo.

Eng: To Emulate my heroes of music, create a unique or catchy riff that would be mine, that people hopefully resonated with and feel the same joy as I do when I hear what I love.

• 2- ¿Cómo describirías la esencia de tu música a alguien que nunca te ha escuchado? // How would you describe the essence of your music to someone who has never heard you?

Spa: No estoy seguro de por qué me siento así ahora, tal vez cambie, pero conectar con individuos, no necesariamente con personas que escuchan en grupo, creo que me gustaría que alguien sintiera algo que quizás nunca haya sentido antes de escuchar mi música, incluso si piensan que soy tonto, estúpido o una mierda, me alegro de que se hayan tomado el tiempo y espero que la sensación haya sido única.

Eng: I’m not sure why this is how I feel right now maybe it’ll change, but to connect with individuals not necessarily people listening as a group, I think I’d like for someone to feel something they might not have ever felt before listening to my music, even if they think I’m silly, stupid, or shit, I’m glad they took the time and I hope the feeling was unique.

• 3- ¿Qué influencias musicales crees que más impactaron en este single? // What musical influences do you feel most impacted this single?

Nirvana, Les Claypool, Thundercat, Mac miller and Beastie boys.

• 4- Mencionaste que tienes una vida interesante que resuena en tu música. ¿Podrías compartir algún momento clave de tu vida que haya influido en tu arte? // You mentioned that you have an interesting life that resonates in your music. Could you share any key moments in your life that have influenced your art?

Spa: He tenido mucha suerte de haber tenido la vida que he tenido hasta ahora, buena y mala, me gustaría compartir esto con el mundo en forma de arte para ayudar a conectar con la gente y, con suerte, ayudar a que se conecten entre sí. He visto música en vivo de lo más increíble. Cuando era adolescente, subí al escenario con “Peter Green” en un pequeño pub en Torquay. Era el guitarrista favorito de BB King y uno de los músicos de blues y pop más influyentes que iniciaron Fleetwood Mac. Estoy en el escenario con él. Me tocó la mano y el sombrero al final de la noche entre el público después de tocar una versión de “Oh Well” que me cambió la vida. Si puedo darle la mitad o un tercio de ese sentimiento a otra persona que él me dio a mí, he ganado en la vida. El conocimiento de que el gran arte y la emoción de ese nivel pueden suceder en un pequeño pub en el campo es la razón por la que la música es mi forma de arte favorita.

Eng: I have been so lucky to have had the life I’ve had thus far, good and bad, I’d like to share this with the world in the form of art to help connect with people and hopefully to help them connect with each other, I’ve seen some of the most amazing music live, when I was a teenager I went on stage with “Peter Green” at a tiny pub in Torquay, this was BB Kings favourite guitarist and one of the most influential blues and pop musicians that started Fleetwood Mac and I’m on stage with him he touched my hand and my hat at the end of the night in the crowd after playing a life changing version of “Oh Well”, if I can give half or a third of that feeling to someone else that he gave to me I have won in life, the knowledge that great art and emotion of that level can happen in a little pub in the countryside is why music is my favourite art form.

• 5- ¿Qué podemos esperar de tu álbum debut que planeas lanzar el año que viene? // What can we expect from your debut album that you plan to release next year?

Spa: Bueno, después de la cantidad de trabajo y tiempo que me llevó hacer esto… Voy a apuntar a un EP por ahora para este año, pero si es posible en 2026, quiero intentar hacer un álbum, se trata simplemente de hacer lo que quiero y que me resulte cómodo lanzar, mi objetivo es que sea ecléctico y divertido, emotivo en algunos lugares, tonto, con suerte gracioso, interesante y genial, sobre todo agradable.

Eng: Well after the amount of work and time it took me to make this… I’m going to aim for an EP at the moment for this year but if possible 2026 I wanna try doing an album, it’s just about making what I want that I’m comfortable releasing, I aim for it to be eclectic and fun, emotional in places, silly, hopefully funny, interesting and cool, most of all enjoyable.

• 6- ¿Qué sueñas lograr con tu música a largo plazo? // What do you dream of achieving with your music in the long term?

Spa: No lo sé. Supongo que se convertirá en lo que se convierta para la gente, solo espero que por mi bien sea en general positivo, me encanta mirar los catálogos de mis artistas favoritos y pensar: ¡Vaya, qué persona tan interesante con un trabajo tan asombroso! ¡Ese es mi sueño de logro, que alguien vea el mío!

Eng: I don’t know. It’ll become what it becomes to people I suppose, I just hope for my sake it’s overall positive, I love looking at my favourite artist’s catalogues thinking wow what an interesting person with such an amazing body of work! That’s my dream of achievement for someone to look at mine!

• 7- ¿Cómo planeas conectar con nuevas audiencias y compartir tu mensaje?// How do you plan to connect with new audiences and share your message?

Spa: Lanzar nueva música ecléctica que atraiga a personas que aún no me han escuchado, usando videos creativos, contenido estéticamente agradable, selecciones de instrumentos excéntricos en futuras canciones, estribillos divertidos, riffs dulces y algún que otro solo cargado de emociones.

Eng: Release new eclectic music that attracts people that haven’t listened to me yet, using creative videos, aesthetically pleasing content, eccentric instrument selections in future songs, fun hooks, sweet riffs and the occasional emotionally charged solo.

• 8- ¿Hay algún colaborador o artista con el que te gustaría trabajar en el futuro? // Are there any collaborators or artists you would like to work with in the future?

Spa: Post Malone, Les Claypool, Thundercat, me encantaría hacer ritmos para raperos por un tiempo que se vean muy divertidos, soy un gran fan de Cypress Hill, Wu Tang DJ Muggs, Dub Fx, Groove Armada, Beck, Joey Valence y Brae y si consigo algunos artistas jóvenes y prometedores, podemos ayudarnos mutuamente a hacer algo realmente genial.

Eng: Post Malone, Les Claypool, Thundercat, I’d love to make beats for rappers for a while that looks great fun, I’m a huge cypress hill, wu tang DJ Muggs fan, Dub Fx, Groove armada, Beck, Joey Valence and Brae and if I got some younger up and coming artists that we can help each other make something really cool.
