Interview with Wotts about his single “Boy + Girl”

Hoy tenemos la oportunidad de conversar con Wotts, el dúo indie pop de Ottawa que ha estado ganando terreno con su sonido fresco y su habilidad para mezclar influencias modernas y retro. Con el reciente lanzamiento de su sencillo "Boy + Girl", el último de su EP Good People, Bad People, Wotts demuestra una vez más que no temen tomar riesgos creativos. En esta entrevista, profundizamos en su proceso creativo, las decisiones detrás de su nuevo material y lo que les depara el futuro.

1). ¿Cómo nació Wotts y cuál fue la inspiración detrás del nombre de la banda? // How was Wotts born an what was the inspiration behind the band’s name 

Wotts (Spa): Wotts en realidad comenzó como un colectivo de artistas, y no solo músicos, sino también diseñadores gráficos y videógrafos. Básicamente éramos amigos que buscaban algo en lo que volcar nuestra creatividad y elegimos la música como la forma de mostrarlo todo. Ni siquiera recuerdo cómo obtuvimos el nombre, pero creo que es un guiño a nuestro lugar de origen (Ottawa).

Wotts (Eng): Wotts actually started off as collective of artists, and not just musicians, graphic designers and videographers too. Basically we were friends looking for something to pour our creativity into and we picked music as the way to showcase it all. I can’t even remember how we got the name, but I think it’s a bit of a shoutout to where we’re from (Ottawa). 

2). Has tocado en festivales como RBC Bluesfest y Canadian Music Week, ¿qué impacto tuvieron estas experiencias en tu música? // You have played at festivals such as RBC Bluesfest and Canadian Music Week, what impact have these experiences had on your music? 

Wotts (Spa): Tuvo un gran impacto. Desde el punto de vista de la confianza, nos dio el empujón que necesitábamos para seguir por nuestro propio camino. Y desde una perspectiva artesanal, después de conocer a un montón de gente de la industria y artistas más importantes en estos shows, nos dio una idea de lo duro que deben trabajar las bandas para pasar al siguiente nivel.

Wotts (Eng): Its had a pretty big impact. From a confidence standpoint it gave us the push we needed to keep going down our own path. And from a craft perspective, after meeting a bunch of industry people and bigger acts at these shows, it gave us a glimpse of how hard bands need to work to jump to the next level. 

3). ¿Cuál fue la inspiración detrás de esta canción en particular? // What was the inspiration behind this particular song? 

Wotts (Spa): Últimamente hemos estado escuchando mucho de los primeros Blur y me di cuenta de que muchas de esas canciones contaban historias usando personajes ficticios. Sé que eso no es exactamente revolucionario hoy en día, pero es algo que nunca habíamos intentado antes. No diré que nos adentramos tanto en la tradición como algunas de las canciones de Blur, pero fue una buena incursión en ese mundo. En cuanto a la música, esta definitivamente lleva a Tame Impala y Dayglow en la manga. ¡Nos encanta el pop nostálgico!

Wotts (Eng): We’ve been listening to a lot of early Blur lately, and I noticed a lot of those songs told stories using fictional characters. I know that’s not exactly revolutionary nowadays, but it’s something we never tried before. I won’t say we got as deep into lore as some of the Blur songs did, but it was a nice toe dip into that world. As far as the music goes, this one definitely wears Tame Impala and Dayglow on its sleeve. We love nostalgic pop! 

4). ¿Qué te llevó a optar por un enfoque más íntimo en comparación con los otros sencillos? // What led you to opt for a more intimate approach compared to the other singles?   

Wotts (Spa): Creo que siempre estamos tratando de desafiarnos a nosotros mismos para no hacer la misma canción una y otra vez. En general, nos gustaría pensar que hemos creado una "vibra Wotts", pero creemos que dentro de eso, hay espacio para jugar un poco. Por lo general, nos encanta enterrar cosas en efectos, especialmente voces, así que fue un buen cambio despojarlas de todo en esta canción.

Wotts (Eng): I think we’re always trying to challenge ourselves to not make the same song over and over again. Overall we’d like to think we’ve built a ‘Wotts vibe’, but we think within that, there’s room to play around a little. We usually love to bury stuff in effects, especially vocals, so it was a nice change to strip it back on this song. 

5). ¿Qué mensaje esperas transmitir? // What message do you hope to convey? 

Wotts (Spa): En “Boy + Girl”, en todo caso, es simplemente una sensación de “todos hemos pasado por eso”. Es decir, si estás escuchando y estás en una mala relación o rompiste con alguien, puede parecer que es el fin del mundo, pero la mayoría de las veces lograrás llegar al otro lado y encontrar la felicidad. Solo lleva tiempo.

Wotts (Eng): On “Boy + Girl”, if anything it’s really just a feeling of “we’ve all been there”. Meaning if you’re listening and you’re in a bad relationship or you broke up with someone, it can feel like it’s the end of the world, but more times than not you’ll make it through to the other side and find happiness. It just takes time. 

6). ¿Cómo fue el proceso de producción? // How was the production process?   

Wotts (Spa): Como la mayoría de nuestras canciones, primero se nos ocurrió la melodía vocal y construimos la pista en torno a ella. Producimos y grabamos todo nosotros mismos, lo cual es bueno porque realmente nos permite probar un montón de cosas sin preocuparnos por las limitaciones de tiempo o molestar a nadie. Por ejemplo, en esta, recuerdo que la línea de bajo originalmente no tenía una onda funk, y la cambiamos justo hacia el final. También usamos una caja de ritmos para comenzar, pero decidimos dejarlo ir con tambores reales. Definitivamente, hay formas más eficientes de producir, pero nos gusta tener la libertad de cambiar las cosas a medida que avanzamos.

Wotts (Eng): Like most of our songs, we came up with the vocal melody first and built the track around it. We produce and record everything ourselves which is nice because it really lets us try a bunch of things without worrying about time constraints or annoying anyone. For example on this one I remember the bassline not having a funk vibe originally, and we changed it right towards the end. We also used a drum machine to start but decided to let it rip with real drums. There’s definitely more efficient ways to produce, but we like having the freedom to change things as we move along. 

7). Has mencionado tu deseo de no ser predecible con tu música, ¿cómo logras el equilibrio entre mantenerte fiel a tu sonido y experimentar con nuevas ideas? // You've mentioned your desire to not be predictable with your music, how do you manage the balance between sticking to your sound and experimenting with new ideas?   

Wotts (Spa): Estamos aprendiendo que es una línea muy fina. Hemos estado hablando con algunos sellos y gente de la industria y muchos de ellos dicen que deberíamos dejar de ser tan dispersos y mantenernos en un sonido centrado. No es que piense que están equivocados, soy un gran fan de Tame Impala, Blur y Mac Demarco y su música se conecta muy bien. Lo mismo con bandas como The Strokes u Oasis. Reconoces sus canciones cuando las escuchas. Al mismo tiempo, estoy súper inspirado por Fontaines D.C. y Gorillaz, y pueden cambiar de onda en un abrir y cerrar de ojos. Creo que a medida que continuemos encontraremos ese punto medio, hasta entonces, la gente todavía puede sorprenderse.

Wotts (Eng): We’re learning it’s a very fine line. We’ve been talking with some labels and industry people and a lot of them say we should stop being so all over the place and stick to a focused sound. It’s not that I think they’re wrong, I’m a huge fan of Tame Impala, Blur and Mac Demarco and their music all ties together nicely. Same with bands like The Strokes or Oasis. You know their songs when you hear them. At the same time, I’m super inspired by Fontaines D.C. and Gorillaz, and they can change vibes at the drop of a hat. I think as we continue we’ll find that happy medium, until then, people may still get surprised. 

8). ¿Qué es lo que más te entusiasma de lo que viene para Wotts? // What are you most excited about coming up for Wotts? 

Wotts (Spa): Empezamos a trabajar en nuestro primer disco de larga duración hace unos dos meses. Teniendo en cuenta la capacidad de atención en el año 2024, es posible que lo dividamos en dos EP más largos, pero, sea como sea, estamos entusiasmados por sacar un proyecto más grande y audaz.

Wotts (Eng): We started working on our first full length record about two months ago. Given attention spans in the year 2024, we may slice it into two longer EPs, but no matter what we’re excited to get a bigger and bolder project out there. 

9). ¿Tienes planes de explorar otros géneros o colaboraciones para este año y el próximo? // Do you have plans to explore other genres or collaborations for this year and next year?   

Wotts (Spa): 100%. Si tomaras una instantánea de lo que nos inspira en este momento, es el britpop de finales de los 90 y muchas bandas de guitarra inglesas e irlandesas actuales. Quién sabe si alguna vez verán la luz del día, pero hemos hecho demos de algunas pistas con influencias grunge, britpop e incluso hip hop. Tal vez las publiquemos con un nombre diferente, pero todo eso para decir que seguimos explorando. En cuanto a las colaboraciones, ¡sí! Por lo general, lo hacemos todo por nuestra cuenta, pero estamos empezando a abrirnos a la idea de trabajar con otros artistas. No nos veo renunciando a las riendas de la producción todavía, pero nos encanta la idea de que otros músicos pongan su toque mágico en nuestras canciones, ya que nos impulsa a dar lo mejor de nosotros.

Wotts (Eng): 100%. If you took a snapshot of what’s inspiring us right now it’s late 90s Britpop and a lot of current English and Irish guitar bands. Who knows if these will ever see the light of day, but we’ve demoed some grunge, britpop and even hip hop influenced tracks. Maybe we release those under a different name, but all that to say, we’re still all about exploring. As far as collaborations go, yes! We usually do it all on our own but we’re starting to open up to the idea of working with other artists.  I don’t see us giving up production reigns yet, but we love the idea of other musicians putting their magic touch on our songs since it pushes us to bring our best.
